The most recent referendum was held on October 27th, 2014. The current term runs from 2014 – 2018. In order to be eligible to vote, you must meet the Qualification of electors as set out in Section 17(1) of the Municipal Elections Act. You can vote in the Municipality of Wawa election, if you are, on voting day: A Canadian citizen, and At least 18 years old, and A resident of the Municipality of Wawa, or A non-resident owner or tenant of land in the Municipality of Wawa, or their spouse, and Not prohibited from voting under any law Definitions for resident elector and non-resident elector: Resident elector: your residence where you live. If you live in Wawa, then you are eligible to vote in Wawa’s election. You are only unliable to have one residence. Non-Resident elector: if you live in one municipality, and own or rent property in Wawa, you are eligible to vote in each municipality’s election. Spouse of a non-resident elector: if your spouse qualifies as a non-resident elector in Wawa, then you can moreover vote in Wawa’s election. Persons Prohibited from Voting You are prohibited from voting in the Municipality of Wawa, if you are: A person serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional facility. A corporation. A person vicarial as an Executor or Trustee, or in any other representative capacity, except as a voting proxy. A person who was convicted of the untruthful practice, if the voting is less than five years without he or she was convicted. What determines a residence? A person’s residence is the permanent lodging place to which, whenever absent, he or she intends to return. What determines a non-resident elector? Sometimes, it is complicated to determine whether you qualify as a non-resident elector. The Municipal Elections Act, 1996 states you must be the owner or tenant of land. For example, if you have a cottage in Wawa which is unquestionably owned by a trust, or you have a merchantry premises that is owned by your merchantry and not you personally, then you are not considered to be the owner of the land, and therefore, you would not be eligible to vote in Wawa’s election. A person may only vote once You may only vote once in the Municipality of Wawa’s municipal referendum regardless of how many properties you own or rent within the Municipality of Wawa. There is a special rule for students who may be living yonder from home while they shepherd school. If you are a student and consider “your home” to be in Wawa where you live when you are not peekaboo school, then you are eligible to vote in both Wawa and the municipality where you currently live while peekaboo school (Municipal Elections Act, 1996, c.32, s.2 (2.1)).
